If you're going to write on this subject, you should note that "mosque" is a misnomer. The proposed project is actually a community center.
ReplyDeleteEver since 9/11, Americans have challenged Muslim-Americans to actively separate themselves from the extremists responsible for the attacks. Now, when a Muslim group does exactly that with the proposal of this facility (which is to be built several blocks from Ground Zero, in an empty former Burlington Coat Factory, on a street full of fast food restaurants and businesses of ill-repute -- hardly "hallowed ground"), their efforts at becoming more community-minded are opposed.
